Contract for the Igarapava Hydroelectric Power Plant maintenance has been given to GE Renewable Energy
GE Renewable Energy, which contributed essential machinery and solutions throughout the building and installation of Igarapava, has recently signed a new contract to support the plant’s operation and maintenance.
Over a five-year period, GE Renewable Energy will provide services in all five hydroelectric producing units available, twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.
The hydroelectric project, which is located on the boundary of the Brazilian states of Minas Gerais and São Paulo, has a total installed capacity of 210 MW, enough to power 225,000 people.
The Igarapava Hydroelectric Power Plant, located in Rio Grande in the Paraná River Basin, between the municipalities of Igarapava and Rifaina in So Paulo; Conquista and Sacramento in Minas Gerais, Hydro Solutions, a subsidiary of GE Renewable Energy, has secured a deal to offer comprehensive operation and maintenance. The Igarapava Hydroelectric Power Plant was a Brazilian pioneer in the usage of the “Bulb” turbogenerator group, which maximizes energy output from dams with fast flowing water and exceptionally low heads of less than 20 meters from top to bottom.
During the construction and installation of Igarapava, GE Renewable Energy was among the project’s key suppliers. The corporation is now responsible for the operation and maintenance of all five hydroelectric producing units, each of which can produce 42 MW, for a total installed capacity of 210 MW, under the new contract. This amount of energy is enough to meet the electricity needs of 225,000 people.
GE Renewable Energy will operate the plant 24 hours a day, seven days a week to fulfill the contract scope. GE’s team is also in charge of creating and implementing the full plant maintenance plan, from routine activities to predictive and preventive actions, as well as unplanned maintenance, in addition to the day-to-day activities.
“This new contract with the Igarapava Hydroelectric Power Plant shows the customer’s confidence in our experience and knowledge in the operation and maintenance of hydroelectric plants, accumulated during more than 20 years of operation in this area in Brazil. We reaffirm our commitment to support the generation of clean, affordable and reliable energy for millions of Brazilians by helping to optimize the operations of the plants, so that they can make the most of their assets and resources to meet the demand for electricity in the country,”says Pascal Radue, President & CEO of GE Renewable Energy’s Hydro business.
“The plant is over 23 years-old and our focus is on maintaining a very solid management of Igarapava. Therefore, we saw the need to have as a partner such as GE Renewable Energy, a company that could carry out the operation and maintenance with great technological capacity and expertise to mitigate risks. says Cláudio Silva, General Manager of Igarapava Hydroelectric Power Plant. “In addition to the technical expertise, GE Renewable Energy’s team has also proved to be committed to high standard practices in governance, health, safety, and people development, which positively reflects into the day-to-day operation,”says Pascal Radue, President & CEO of GE Renewable Energy’s Hydro business.
GE Renewable Energy is focused on producing and sustaining a renewable asset base, which includes hydropower, which contributes for more than 60% of the electric matrix in Brazil. GE collaborates with its clients to help down the cost of renewable energy by making operations more competitive, a critical step in hastening the global energy revolution.
