IIT Madras LTI To Develop A 5G Base Station And Single- box Solution For Rural Connectivity

Larsen & Toubro Infotech, a global technology consulting and digital solutions company, is collaborating on 5G research with IIT Madras, one of India’s major research organizations. LTI and IIT Madras aim to innovate in the developing 5G domain by enabling 5G framework validation, low-frequency RF deployments, and use case testing via a 5G testbed through this collaboration.

LTI and IIT Madras will collaborate on research to establish a low-cost, low-frequency 5G network for enhanced connectivity in rural India as part of this agreement. This effort’s main goal is to develop a 5G base station and single-box solution for rural connectivity. To design these low-cost base stations and networks for rural connectivity, LTI will collaborate closely with IIT Madras. For this endeavor, LTI will also provide expertise in research skills as well as relevant infrastructure assistance.

LTI’s partnership with IIT Madras reflects our commitment to leverage this technology to connect people from remote parts of India in a better way,”

said Mr. Nachiket Deshpande, Chief Operating Officer, and Executive Board Member, LTI. 

This project is part of LTI’s 1step CSR program, which demonstrates the company’s commitment to research and development (SDG 9 – Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure). This relationship is also linked with the Government of India’s ‘Make-in-India’ agenda by supporting the creation of an indigenous 5G network.

“IITM’s 5G testbed project is an effort to encourage Indian startups and the industry to take an early lead in 5G. The goal of the project is to build a testbed that closely resembles a real-world 5G deployment,”

said Prof. Mahesh Panchagnula, Dean (Alumni and Corporate Relations), IIT Madras.

“The 5G technology has immense potential and could prove to be the best option to bridge the digital divide in India. For evolved urban areas, it will help advance and enhance the benefits of digital technologies over a faster connectivity network. Our core strength of academic excellence will provide the right partnership platform needed to contribute towards the digital goals of our nation. We look forward to our collaboration with LTI and aim to create a positive impact for society at large,” 

Dr. Radha Krishna Ganti, Assistant Professor, Department of Electrical Engineering, IIT Madras and Principal Investigator for this CSR project, said.

LTI’s experience in 5 G-based solutions is further enhanced through the collaboration with IIT Madras. LTI will also collaborate with IIT Madras to develop and validate use cases based on the 5G testbed for use in a variety of areas, including smart manufacturing, Industry 4.0, Smart Cities, and Media.

These initiatives are targeted at developing a cutting-edge 5G framework and allowing end customers to use the 5G infrastructure to accelerate their digital transformation.
