ABBOTT is launching a proactive, voluntary recall of powder formulae including Similac, Alimentum, and EleCare made in one of the company’s production plants in Sturgis, Mich. There are no metabolic deficit nutrition formulations included in the recall.
Following four consumer reports of Cronobacter sakazakii or Salmonella Newport in children who had consumed powder infant formula prepared in this plant, Abbott is voluntarily recalling these items.
In addition, as part of Abbott’s quality control procedures, we monitor our manufacturing facilities for Cronobacter sakazakii and other infections on a regular basis. Cronobacter sakazakii was discovered in non-product contact parts of the plant during testing in our Sturgis, Michigan, facility. Salmonella Newport was not discovered. This investigation is still underway.
Importantly, no product that has been distributed has tested positive for either of these terms, and we are continuing to test. Prior to release, Abbott performs thorough quality checks on each completed batch of infant formula, including microbiological investigation. Before any product is released, it is checked for Cronobacter sakazakii, Salmonella Newport, and other diseases, and it must test negative. Additionally, all three Cronobacter sakazakii complaints had samples that tested negative for Cronobacter sakazakii. The sample associated with the SalmonellaNewport complaint was also found to be negative for SalmonellaNewport.
While Abbott’s testing of the finished product detected no pathogens, we are taking action by recalling the powder formula manufactured in this facility with an expiration of April 1, 2022, or later. No Abbott liquid formulas, powder formulas, or nutrition products from other facilities are impacted by the recall.
Cronobacter sakazakiiis commonly found in the environment and a variety of areas in the home. It can cause fever, poor feeding, excessive crying or low energy as well as other serious symptoms. It’s important to follow the instructions for proper preparation, handling, and storage of powder formulas.
“We know parents depend on us to provide them with the highest quality nutrition formulas. We’re taking this action so parents know they can trust us to meet our high standards, as well as theirs. We deeply regret the concern and inconvenience this situation will cause parents, caregivers, and health care professionals,”said Joe Manning, executive vice president, nutritional products, Abbott.
