GE Healthcare is pleased to announce that it has entered into a collaboration agreement with RaySearch Laboratories AB (publ), a leading provider of radiation oncology software, to develop a new radiation therapy simulation and treatment planning workflow solution that will make it easier to target radiation to shrink tumors.

RaySearch’s superior treatment planning tools and GE Healthcare’s premier multi-modality (CT/MR/molecular imaging) simulator systems will be combined to make cancer therapy faster and more precise, according to the firms. Over 800 clinics in more than 40 countries utilize RaySearch’s software.

“GE Healthcare is delighted to be partnering with RaySearch, as we seek to improve precision guidance during radiation therapy planning and treatment. Cancer care can only be improved if those involved work together and this is one of several partnerships that we are pursuing for the benefit of caregivers and patients. Clinicians tell us that navigating through multiple systems to get a clear picture of where cancer cells are is one of their biggest pain points. We are working to bring together complementary solutions and technologies along the radiation therapy treatment pathway to help with this,”

said Jan Makela, President & CEO, Imaging, at GE Healthcare.

According to the US National Institutes of Health, more than 60% of cancer patients receive radiation therapy, which necessitates high-resolution imaging to accurately target tumors while sparing healthy tissue. Precision imaging is essential for assessing tumor size, shape, and features, as well as distinguishing healthy tissues. The time-consuming simulation procedure and the necessity to manually navigate different systems and workflows might be a major challenge for oncologists. The collaboration’s goal is to make this procedure easier by allowing point-of-care decision-making in the simulation room.

“Software has tremendous potential, and it is now the driving force for innovation in oncology. We are very pleased to be working with a partner with the scale of GE Healthcare, one of the largest providers of precision healthcare, to bring scientific advancements to the clinical world. Our solutions already support hundreds of clinics worldwide in the fight against cancer,”

said Johan Löf, founder and CEO, RaySearch Laboratories.

GE Healthcare and RaySearch want to make it easier for hospitals and cancer treatment centers to use an interoperable and integrated workflow to improve clinical planning and operational outcomes. GE and RaySearch are working together to bring complementary technologies and solutions together to advance innovation and help the radiation oncology community as providers look to automate radiation oncology processes in the face of rising patient numbers and advancements in radiation treatment delivery procedures.
